Ancient Greek Soldiers

Youngsters were doled out to a military obligation of two years when they turned 18. Regularly they were sent to the wildernesses of Attica. At 17 years old children from prosperous families were enrolled as warriors and prepared in games, chasing, and mock fighting. Those that didn't measure up had their privileges decreased and those that graduated, at 19 years old, beginning living with other men and taking an interest in fights when the need emerged. The groups of wedded fighters lived separated.

The run of the mill Greek fighter was a hoplite with a lance. In the naval force, there were rowers and marines. The hoplites were the world's previously realized resident troopers. They possessed the land, purchased their own reinforcement, and cast a ballot, giving them a voice in the states that they secured.

Warriors involved the upper degree of society. "My riches is lance and blade," went one Cretan drinking tune," and the strong shield which secures my tissue; with this I plow...with this I am an entitled ace of the serfs." The seventh-century solider-writer Archilochos expressed: "I am two things: a warrior who follows the Master Battles, and one who comprehends the endowment of the Muses' affection."
